To be effective, the media in whole house backwashing systems must be replaced on a regular basis. Coal-based or coconut shell carbons should be replaced at intervals no longer than 3 years. Catalytic carbon will last 5 - 7 years. Systems that use carbon in any form should have KDF redox media as a bedding to prevent bacterial contamination. For systems designed to remove iron and/or manganese, we recommend LivingWaters™ Filox® media. This media will last 7 - 8 years before replacement is necessary - unless it is contained in a LivingWaters Vortech tank in which case it will last 8 - 10 years.
